Spanish wine group Bodega Matarromera has announced that it has developed a new sustainable, lightweight bottle made from bioplastic PLA to package its wines.
The group subcontracted Aimplas, the Technological Institute of Plastics located in Valencia, Spain, to design the preform mould and the blowing mould of the bottle manufactured with PLA.
The wine bottle, made from the bioplastic PLA, is the first bottle manufactured manufactured from this material to reproduce the design of traditional glass bottles for wine, says Aimplas. The bottle is lighter than a normal wine bottle, ony 50 grams, fully-recyclable and has a lower environmental impact in its manufacturing process, states the Spanish group.
Aimplas also developed new characteristics of the wine packaging that it says, due to an inner coating with silicon oxide, resulted in considerable improvement of the permeability to different gases.
The project was supported by a programme of the EEA GRANTS, funded by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, as well as by the Ministry of Science and Innovation from Spain through the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).
